She's sweet, but she's no Einstein
My little friend, pictured here, was repeatedly perching on the window sill and trying to tap her way into the house.Unfortunately, she moved from this window to the front of the house where she could get up more momentum. To stop her repeated flying into the window, we bought a balloon and tied the string to the window sill. It moves around when the furnace comes on, and I guess it looks human enough to discourage her hanging around that window. I hope she doesn't decide to try another one. I don't want her to hurt herself, but I also don't want a housefull of balloons.
If my next post is titled "the balloons are coming, the balloons are coming" you'll know what happened. When it comes down to the decision, I care more about cardinals than I do about interior decorating.

We had a problem like that, some years back, with one of our free-range geese. After his mate died, he would spend hours outside our kitchen window, staring at his reflection. It took him months to sort himself out.
Hopefully, your little cardinal will find himself a real, live companion soon.
Good idea about the balloon!
It's sad, isn't it, to see them mourn? This cardinal (I believe) is one of a breeding pair, as I see the male feeding her. He will sit in the tree and watch while she flies into the window, but makes no attempt to do so himself. It's very baffling behavior on her part.
The good news, so far, is the balloon seems to be working.
