The one that got away

Last night, while doing some chores out back, I saw our resident Canada geese and realized they had a gosling with them. Cute, as all baby animals are, but it was dusk by that time and no hope of a decent photo.

So, in the spirit of spring, I give you the mallard duckling I saw in San Antonio a few years ago instead.

Thanks, Liza Lee & Jimmy. There were a couple dozen of these little guys all over the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio, each one cuter than the last.

Reminds me of "Excelsior" a mallard duck I raised from the egg when I was a teen.
Until he died years later, he was convinced I was his mom.

Great name, FC. I never had a duck, but vaguely remember my Dad giving me a chicken one time. One of our neighbors growing up had chickens as pets and I thought that was very, very cool. I never understood why I couldn't have chickens, too. Later I found out that my Mom hated chickens from growing up on a farm. The only thing she'll say about them is that feeding them was her chore, and that they were mean and always pecked her. I guess some grudges are hard to relinquish. :)
