Where I live
In a recent comment, Patricia asked where I live.
I live in a suburban neighborhood with houses close on either side of me. In front of the house is a nice paved road that goes nowhere (ie, around in a circle) and just out back is a golf course. The heavenly part is that the piece of the course right behind the house is what I think is called "the rough" so we look at trees and deer instead of golfers.
Between us and the golf course is a protected wetland - a small stream with a 25 yard buffer on either side of it that cannot be disturbed, mowed, or planted in. At angle to one side there's a field, currently cultivated, that will undoubtedly be sold some day for development. For now, this is my therapy. I sit out back and watch the non-human, non-urban, non-automated world, and I feel myself relax.

That's interesting! From your posts I never would have guessed it was suburban!
I think it's so important to have some *wild space* to gaze off into at the end of the day.
It is for me; even in the DC suburbs where we lived before, I managed to make the back yard a refuge and a retreat.
Wow, seems like a responsible golf course plan. My friend's house backs up to a golf course but there is no buffer. It's like strangers walking behind her house all day. That would drive me crazy, but your setup seems very nice. Thanks for the info :)
We took all that into account when house hunting. Some of the houses we looked at in other subdivisions had cart paths through the back yard, and one had a tee about 30 yards from the back deck. The golfers here are generally considerate and the golf club is a good neighbor; nonetheless a few of neighbors regularly have an inundation of golf balls.
